Physical was released on 28 September 1981, and was the lead single taken from Olivia’s eleventh studio album of the same name, Physical (1981).

Physical had also been offered to Tina Turner by her manager Roger Davies, but when Turner declined, Davies gave the song to Newton-John, another of his clients. It was an immediate smash hit and spent 10 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (USA), but peaked at number 7 in the UK.

The song was written by Steve Kipner & Terry Shaddick, who had originally intended to offer it to Rod Stewart.
